STYLING A SMALL SPACE OR OFFICE BY RE-PURPOSING AN IKEA MUD ROOM SHOE CABINET FOR FILING & STORAGE

In search of a filing solution for our home office, the last thing we wanted was a clunky metal + boxy filing cabinet.  In need of an innovative small space storage solution we were looking for 3 things to make it a home run…

1  –  It must be stylish, yet practical

2 – It must take up a smaller footprint then a normal filing cabinet

3 – It must offer efficient organization and storage that can be hidden

Rounding our way through our local IKEA, is when I came across a mud room cabinet typically used for shoe storage.  Growing up on the West Coast, we are not too familiar with mud room furniture.  Maybe that is why when I saw it, all I could think of was, “This is exactly what I’m looking for.”

The unique function of a drop down compartment makes a shoe cabinet not only ideal for limited spaces, but the perfect size to place filing folders and other storage.

We loved the cabinets so much, that we actually decided to place them in our hallway outside of our office.   They really help to warm up an empty space like a hallway, while only taking up 8.75 inches of depth.

The style of cabinet that we found at IKEA is from the HEMNES family which comes in black-brown or white (featured below).

Also, these drop down drawers would make perfect storage for tucking kids toys and books away too.  I’d love to know if you end up integrating a re-purposed shoe cabinet into your life.
